WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR FIRST DENTIST APPOINTMENT

Scheduling regular dental visits help to avoid oral health issues then diagnose and treat any conditions. We want you to be prepared when going to the dentist for the first time – whether you are experiencing dental pain, changing dentists, or it’s time for your checkup.

At the Landing Dental Spa, we don’t want you to hide that charming smile of yours; we want to make it grow and give you the confidence you deserve.

Before Your First Appointment

For your first time, we ask that new patients fill out an informational packet. Download our New Patient Packet here. We have several other new patient forms that we ask to be filled out before your visit. The forms include dental history release of information, financial policy, informed consent, medical history and patient financial agreement. Click here for more details.

Make sure to plan enough time off from work or school to not feel rushed. If you don’t have much time to spare, we suggest scheduling an end-of-the-day appointment to go home after your visit with us. Get to the office at least 15 minutes early to fill out any essential paperwork and give the staff time to get you all set up. Come prepared with your driver’s license and insurance card ready when you check-in at the reception desk.

Do you have dental insurance? See what options your dentists provide. You may have to pay a copay at the office, or your dentist might bill you the balance after your insurance pays them.

During Your First Appointment

At a typical dental appointment, the dental hygienist covers your chest with a plastic or paper cloth. Laying out on a tray, you’ll see ultrasonic tools that the hygienist uses to work on your teeth. You can expect them to begin the oral health screening process by scraping off any buildup of plaque and tartar on the surfaces and along your gum line. Your teeth will be polished with a tool that has a spinning head. The appointment may end with floss and a fluoride mouthwash to make those pearly whites extra clean.

Please inform your hygienist if you are feeling pain or discomfort throughout the cleaning process. There will be rest breaks when needed.

The hygienist will then bring in the dentist to conduct a thorough exam and check each tooth. They will be looking for pockets or gaps between your teeth and gums. A periodontal probe, metal or ultrasonic tool, helps the dentist find any problem areas while measuring the depth of your gum pockets.

Once completed, the dentists will talk to you about your oral health. Feel free to ask any questions and address comments or concerns at this time.

After Your First Appointment

If your mouth is sore, it is suggested to take over-the-counter pain relievers. Don’t hesitate to call the office between routine visits if you have additional questions or are experiencing any pain and discomfort.

Participate in follow-up care. It is highly recommended to schedule a dental exam every six months. Your dentist will provide you with details regarding the next steps if you need to come in for specific appointments, such as to treat cavities or have a root canal procedure.

FOR THE KIDSFirst Dentist Appointment - Landing Dental Spa

It is best to prepare your child with details on what to expect during their dental appointment, to ensure they feel comfortable. Also, explain the importance of going to the dentist in a fun, playful manner – bring their favorite character(s) from a movie or tv show into the story!

The average time a dental appointment lasts is 30 to 45 minutes. You can expect a full exam of teeth, jaws, bite, gums, oral tissues to check the growth and development. A gentle cleaning might take place if needed, followed by polishing teeth and removing plaque, tartar and stains. The dentist may conduct a minor tutorial on how to properly use floss and fluoride.

X-rays might take place depending on age, risks of disease, and symptoms. X-rays are used to diagnose problems that are not as quickly noticed; for example, having damage to jawbones, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts or tumors and decay in between teeth.

Depending on the child’s age, emotional tendencies and prior health history, their behaviors and reactions can vary. Parents should give moral support and stay calm while in the dental exam room.

For the wee little guys (infants), the dentist can provide information on baby bottle tooth decay, infant feeding practices, mouth cleaning, teething, pacifier habits, finger-sucking habits, etc.

Don’t hesitate to address any questions, comments, or concerns you or your child may have regarding the appointment.
